On Love and Mercy:
A Social Justice Devotional
Excerpt: “The path of social justice asks people to decide whether they prefer truth to ignorant bliss. It upholds truth as an attainable and palpable reality that can be discovered and obtained.
Truth is often ugly, and it can lead us to places of discomfort and pain. We discover that our loved ones are abusers, or that our country isn’t as innocent as we thought it was, or find out that a friend assaulted someone. Truth is confrontational and messy, and it often nudges us to either action or inaction.”
Social Justice is Holy
Bible text from Chapter 1: Amos 5:24; Proverbs 21:15; Isaiah 1:17; Micah 6:8; Isaiah 30:18
“But let justice run down like waters
And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream [flowing abundantly].
When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous (the upright, the one in right standing with God),
But to the evildoers it is disaster.
Learn to do good.
Seek justice,
Rebuke the ruthless,
Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the [rights of the] widow [in court].
He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
Except to be just, and to love [and to diligently practice] kindness (compassion),
And to walk humbly with your God [setting aside any overblown sense of importance or self-righteousness]?
Therefore the Lord waits [expectantly] and longs to be gracious to you,
And therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you.
[a]For the Lord is a God of justice;
Blessed (happy, fortunate) are all those who long for Him [since He will never fail them].”
