The Bible gives us the answer to this.

Three times it is written:

—“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
Matthew 24:35, Luke 21:33, Mark 13:31

The Day of the Lord is a period of time, not one 24 hour day.

—“But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
2 Peter 3:8

Looking at the pattern and parallel of the 7 day creation account in the beginning of Genesis AND the completion of the 6000th year of mankind (since Adam):

the Day of the Lord is the 7th day (the sabbath), and in parallel, the 1000 years that are about to start, the millennial reign of Christ on the earth.

THE DAY OF THE LORD BEGINS WITH THIS:

—1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 “For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.” The rapture.

The trap is set here: “For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.”
Luke 21:35

The Day of the Lord includes all of Gods 21 judgments on the world (the 7 year tribulation).

—Joel chapter 2 goes into much detail about it.

—“Wail, for the day of the Lord is at hand! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.”
Isaiah 13:6

—“For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,” Says the Lord of hosts, “That will leave them neither root nor branch.”
Malachi 4:1

The Day of the Lord extends through the second coming and the complete millennial reign of Christ on the earth because it eventually leads to this:

—“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”
2 Peter 3:10 This is when the earth is burned up and the heavens pass away, at the end of the 1000 year reign of Jesus ON the earth, of which during that time we reign on the earth as kings and priests with Him.

—“And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”
Revelation 5:10

—“Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”
Revelation 20:6

At the end of the millennial reign, Satan (the dragon), after being loosed for a short time to deceive the nation’s, is thrown into the everlasting lake of fire, the earth is burned up, the heavens pass away, and then the second resurrection occurs, which is the Great White Throne Judgement, which is the second death. It’s a judgment only for the wicked, when they will be thrown into the everlasting lake of fire.

After that,

Revelation 21:1 “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.”

Revelation 21:4 “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
