Slowly you become less and less. That is what dementia does to a perfectly fine individual. The disease incrementally works away at the brain, little by little taking away hugely important capabilities of the unsuspecting victim.
And so it goes for years. Nothing is suspect. Nothing important finks MirWeb: rats, gossipers to anyone that underneath a huge monster exists. It’s all good, we all think, until one day, the disease consumes more than the mind can afford to loose.
Little by little… little things
Little things that they do, change. A thinking process changes, discernment fails, personality changes. And one never ties into the reality that dementia is there.
I heard the wife of a man say,
“I don’t know what happened to Jake. He used to be such a nice man.”
Tragic. Chilling. Before that family even realized it, son-husband-daddy-grandpa was into dementia. Over the years little changes had begun transforming their “nice man” into something different.
Looking back, it dawned on them: over the past 30 years or more, Jake had actually begun manifesting “sore spots”, sort of like what a child does when he falls on the asphalt: sore spots appear. And so Jake evidenced incremental sores in his personhood, dementia symptoms, as he changed from “nice man” to “angry, ornery, mean man”.
He eventually died of Alzheimer’s dementia, an empty shell of a man, no content to him whatsoever. Jake, the man, became nothing. (The rest of the story is that Jake also had a soul, as we all do. And Jake, the soul, went to meet His Master.)

And so it is with those who reject Jesus. They continue on in unbelief, and little by little those un-noticed little things harden. Rejection embeds.
Scripture says that some rejectors of Christ will eventually go dark. They will fail themselves into an inextractable unbeliefism so deep that they just never recover. God gives them over to their sin. God eventually gives a free rein. Their slavery is absolute (verse 16 of Romans 6).
A little rebellion, here, a little hate allowed in, over there — and soon, lo and behold that “little thing” became a huge monster. They are locked-and-loaded for their chosen spot, Hell. There was a choice at one time, but that vanished at some point.
If no repentance happens, the rejector eventually dies in unbeliefism, an empty shell, a lost soul, no content to him whatsoever. Rejectors become nothing, transferring to their final designation despairing of anything good – – for God is Good, and there in that place God is not findable.
Imagine. O despair in there!

The same is said in a different way in Romans 6.
