A common misconception out there is that, since God created us all – then all of us are his children, “children of God”. Nothing could be further from the truth, actually.
The normal human is actually born into a state of separation from God.
Romans 3:23 – for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. -NKJVersion
Romans 3:10 – As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; -NKJVersion
Romans 5:12 – Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned– -NKJVersion
We see in Scripture,
John 1:12 12 But as many as received Him, to THEM He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
It is a special “right”, a special privilege, to become a child of God. We must receive Him. Until we do… we are totally NOT His children. In fact, as mere men we are condemned to spend eternity with the fallen angels in a place void of all that is good.
Your mother does not confer this upon you by physically giving birth to you, and welcoming you into the human family. By that she merely confers “humaness”. That is quite a limited state of being!
Jesus taught us that another birth is necessary in order to be an actual child of Creator God. ‘You must be born again.’
John 3:1-7 1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; 2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born [c]again.’
Note verse five: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. – John 3:5
The first birth of a normal human is a birth through water, through the waters of the birth sac. It is the Spirit of God that then must confer upon you a “rebirth”, a new life, and that is called – being born again, being born of the Spirit.
When one repents and turns to Jesus for salvation, one is born again in that instant. THAT is what then confers upon you “the right to become children of God” [John 1:12].
