“I didn’t choose a religion”
Years ago when I first became a believer in Jesus, I remember my mama, a Residential School survivor, screaming at me, calling me a traitor, and asking me why I chose a religion that hurt my people.
The fact is, I didn’t choose a religion . . . I chose a way of life that healed my spirit. The religion I can do without, but I can’t do without Jesus.
Yes, I love Jesus and I love our Native way. I will not deny what I believe in because someone else disapproves. How can I deny a Creator that has been so good to me?
Fast forward 22 years later, my mama loves Jesus and she says, “I wish they introduced us to this real Jesus in those schools. We would have prospered greatly. I have found the real Jesus.”
“I chose a way of life that healed my spirit”
Many people have tried to make me feel ashamed for my beliefs, but they obviously don’t understand the mystery. If they did, they would understand and know that this doesn’t come from this people or that people. It’s completely spiritual, which connects our souls to the Creator.
“The religion I can do without, but I can’t do without Jesus.”
I have met Christian and Native Pharisees who have caused more damage through their actions and words. They confuse and divide people with their words of condemnation.
The Creator says you can recognize His people by their fruit, which is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
