…a brief study about the Greek word “love” and how the New Testament uses it
PIC: Love is being like Jesus
Love in the Greek and in the New Testament
Four Greek words: agape, phileo, eros, and storge (and compound words like astorgos, philostorgos) – a study from GotQuestions.org.
– agape (self-sacrificial love)
– phileo (brotherly love)
– eros (sexual love)
– storge (natural, familial love)
___________
– philostorgos (“be devoted”; “to cherish one’s kindred.”) “Combines philos and storge.” Used only once in the New Testament. Found in Romans 12:10.
– astorgos (“no love”, “unloving”) Romans 1:31 describes sinful humanity as having “no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.” See in Romans 1:31, 2 Timothy 3:3, 2 Timothy 3:1-9

“Difficult Times Will Come” – 2 Timothy 3:1-9
“But understand this, that in the last days dangerous times [of great stress and trouble] will come [difficult days that will be hard to bear].
2 For people will be lovers of self [narcissistic, self-focused], lovers of money [impelled by greed], boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane, 3 [and they will be] unloving [devoid of natural human affection, calloused and inhumane], irreconcilable, malicious gossips, devoid of self-control [intemperate, immoral], brutal, haters of good….” – 2 Timothy 3:1-9

From GotQuestions.org. What is Agape Love? – “not a sappy, sentimental feeling”
Agape love involves faithfulness, commitment, and an act of the will. It is distinguished from the other types of love by its lofty moral nature and strong character.

Being unselfish, more thoughtful and gracious to others Excerpt:
Little by little I have been learning to be more and more… like Jesus (emphasis on “slowly learning”!). Being better at anything seems to always take lots of time and practice. I’m consciously practicing. I’m workin’ at it. How ’bout you?
We will produce His love
The will of God for me is without a doubt — to be more like Christ. The Bible teaches we will become more like Christ as we grow in our faith. We will produce His love – the fruit of the Spirit. I’m not a poser. I’m actually doing it!
Imagine what “being saved” has meant to you
The Christian’s mission of love every day
Sorry I offend you by sharing my faith in Jesus

This is natural for us – so put it on
I run to win. Christ did. Do you?

The intervention of God Almighty with wrath at the end of The Great Tribulation:
“Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants. Everyone will suffer–the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor. The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment”.

Embrace the fact – Pete Garcia (of rev310.net) wrote a very insightful piece, Embrace the Suck, about living inside the will of God for us in these days. These End Days are difficult, and they will not get better soon. Have you found yourself “complaining about the way things are”?
“Embrace the fact
that God chose you
to live in this time and place”
What can we do? Pete says….”
Praying for the world to get better?
