Isaac Watts wrote the original text in 1707 as a meditation almost entirely made of questions: “Alas, and did my Saviour bleed, and did my sovereign die, would He devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?”

The self-description is deliberately harsh — Watts isn’t asking to be flattered by the cross, he’s asking how anyone so unworthy could be the reason for it.

“Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the tree?” repeats the same disbelief in a second verse, refusing to let the weight of the question soften on repetition.

The refrain added later by Ralph Hudson answers both questions at once, shifting from disbelief to testimony: “at the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light, and the burden of my heart rolled away.”

That line does two things simultaneously — names a specific moment of change, and describes it physically, as weight actually lifting rather than a feeling improving. “It was there by faith I received my sight” ties the whole hymn back to its opening confusion: the same cross that seemed to demand an impossible answer is where the answer, and the ability to see it, arrived together.

“Drops of grief cannot repay the debt of love I owe” closes the hymn admitting what every verse before it implied — that gratitude, however sincere, was never going to be sufficient payment, only a response.
